Are you looking for the best rooibos teas on the market this year? Then this is the right list for you.

What is Rooibos Tea?

There are two basic types of tea: traditional tea made from tea leaves, and herbal tea that’s made from any number of other plants. Examples of traditional tea include English breakfast tea and green tea. Examples of herbal tea include mint, chamomile or ginger. Rooibos (pronounced “roy-boss”) is a type of herbal tea. It’s made from a plant called “red bush,” or Aspalathus linearis.

Aspalathus linearis only grows in one place in the world: in the Cederberg, which is a mountainous area in the Western Cape province of South Africa. All authentic rooibos tea is sourced from this area. Rooibos has been traditionally enjoyed in South Africa for many years. This tea is delicious, with a mild and aromatic taste. It’s also naturally caffeine-free.

Additionally, rooibos offers several health benefits, which have caused it to draw attention overseas and become quite popular in the U.S. and the rest of the West. Like green tea, rooibos is an abundant source of antioxidants, which help to fight cell damage from free radicals. Rooibos has actually been found to contain 50% more antioxidants than green tea. Antioxidants are important because they help defend the body from various illnesses.

Not only does rooibos contain plentiful antioxidants, but it also is rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C is itself an antioxidant, but also confers many other benefits to the body: it supports the immune system and helps strengthen the body’s defense systems. Rooibos is rich in calcium, magnesium, and fluoride, which help support bone and teeth health. Since it contains plentiful zinc and alpha hydroxy acid, it also benefits skin health. All of these benefits are just the beginning — there are plenty of other health benefits from regularly drinking this nutritious tea.

Rooibos is sometimes called “red tea,” due to the red color of the oxidized tea leaves. Green rooibos is also produced but is far less common.

Things to Look For in a Good Rooibos Tea

Rooibos tea must be imported from South Africa, and there are only a certain amount of producers. As such a rare crop, it’s especially important that sustainability be taken into account. It’s best to buy rooibos from brands that have a track record of ethical production, using organic growing methods and certified fair-trade practices. It’s also great to support brands that empower the local farming economy in South Africa.

As for the tea itself, to enjoy the authentic taste of rooibos, choose a tea brand that doesn’t add any other flavors or extra herbs to its tea blend. There should be only one ingredient: rooibos (Aspalathus linearis).

You can buy loose tea in bulk if you’d rather customize the strength of your tea and/or prefer to make a whole pot of tea at once. Individually wrapped tea bags are also a great option.

How to Take Rooibos Tea

Rooibos can be enjoyed hot or cold. It’s often drunk with a little milk and/or sweetener added, similarly to black tea. Since rooibos is caffeine-free and is low in tannins, it’s much easier on the stomach than black tea or even green tea.

There is no specific dosing information for this tea. Notably, the research on its ability to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease was based on drinking 6 cups of rooibos per day, without milk or sweetener added.
