The Division of Women’s and Infants’ Health (DWIH) is pleased to announce a grant award from the C.J. Foundation for SIDS, Inc., a not-for-profit nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to recognizing the special needs of the SIDS community through funding SIDS research, support services and public awareness initiatives.
The award will provide funding for DWIH to conduct train-the-trainer workshops for hospital designated nurses employed in well-baby and neonatal intensive care units (NICU) at birth hospitals in Virginia. These educational workshops will support hospital-based policy development and provide nursing competencies regarding infant safe sleep practices.
DWIH will collaborate with First Candle/SIDS Alliance to facilitate the workshops. First Candle/SIDS Alliance and the National SIDS and Infant Death Program Support Center (NSIDPCS) has launched a national professional education campaign that will target nurses in NICU and well-baby units at birthing hospitals nationwide. It is the ultimate goal of the campaign, Model Program: The Most Important Modeling Job of your Life, to ensure that every parent leaving a hospital is aware of and prepared to adopt safe sleep messages as recommended by First Candle/SIDS Alliance, the American Academy of Pediatrics, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and others.
