First Trimester

  • At conception sperm fertilizes the egg in the fallopian tube. The zygote, about the size of a pin starts to travel towards the uterus.

  • Once the embryo is in the uterus it actually implants itself within the lining of the uterus. The backbone, spinal column, and nervous system begin to form and vital organs start to take shape.

  • By the fifth week of pregnancy the baby's heart starts beating. The baby is about the size of a raisin right now.
  • By week seven the baby will have facial features including a mouth and tongue.
  • At week eight the baby is considered a fetus. The arms and legs begin to form and fingers can be seen.
  • The heart is almost fully developed and baby teeth begin to form.
  • By the end of the first trimester the baby's heart is complete.
