Shopping
Food safety starts as soon as you get to the grocery store and continues into your home. Refrigerated foods can get warm in your cart or in your car. Bacteria can multiply if foods stay above certain temperatures for too long. Follow these safety tips when shopping and getting your foods home.
Do shop for perishables (foods that can go bad) last.
Do keep meat, poultry, and seafood from dripping on other groceries.
Do not buy foods that are labeled "keep refrigerated" if they are not cold to the touch and in a refrigerated section of the store.
Do touch your frozen foods to ensure they are "frozen solid".
Do check the dates on packages. Do not buy food for which the "sell
by" date has expired.
Do bring an cooler for perishable foods if the drive from the store to your home will be longer than 30 minutes.
Do put your groceries in the coolest part of your car. In cold
weather this would be the trunk. In warm weather put your groceries in the front
or back seat.
