The Facts of Heart Healthy Beans
Beans do not always causes bloating.
It is true that beans cause most people to have intestinal gas and/or belching when
they are not eaten regularly. Vegetarians, who eat dry beans everyday as a source
of protein, are not discomforted by intestinal gas.
Eating less beans means more gas; more beans in your diet will result in less gas. When you add beans to your diet gradually (over a 3 to 8 week period) and eaten regularly (daily or at least 3 times a week), gas will disappear.
Beans are not fattening, the foods eaten with them sometimes are.
1 cup of cooked beans contains 230 calories. This is equal to the calories found
in 1 cup of cooked rice, pasta, or a 7 ounce baked potato. Beans are high in fiber
and low in fat.
Usually, it's the other ingredients in bean dishes that are high in calories, such as bacon, shortening, sugar, or molasses. The benefits of beans far outweigh the drawbacks.
