CHAMPION’s Goals Are:

  • The development of an aggressive coordinated strategic plan that addresses obesity in Virginia

  • The compilation and provision of a state wide electronic resource guide including a directory on community and state programs, as well as data relative to obesity in the Commonwealth.

CHAMPION’s objectives are:

  • To obtain clarity as to the scope of the obesity problem in each region and group.

  • To assess existing programs and intervention activities and available community resources pertaining to nutrition and physical activity in each region and group.

  • To identify issues in the prevention, treatment, and control of obesity within the communities.

  • To compose recommendations for state, community, and local nutrition and physical activity programs and policies, environmental supports, and legislative actions.

CHAMPION’s Vision Is To:

Improve nutrition and physical fitness health for all Virginians in their respective communities.

CHAMPION’s Mission Is To:

Create a united effort among diverse stakeholders and equip communities with the necessary tools to decrease obesity rates within their respective regions and groups.

We are now ready for the next steps. These include:

  1. Creation of a user friendly website housing information on programs, coalitions, grants, research articles, tools, etc.

  2. Publishing and disseminating of regional reports back to the communities. This will give communities a chance to see what was discussed at their CHAMPION meeting and provide resources that can be used for activism on the local level.

  3. Publishing and disseminating of a CHAMPION report. This will highlight major themes that came from all the meetings and will provide policy makers, coalitions and interested organizations with insight into what participants across the Commonwealth are thinking/recommending.

  4. Review suggestions with a critical eye; reviewing research and guidelines in order to present credible and logical recommendations for the Commonwealth.
