Service
Sickle Cell Programs and Services in the Commonwealth
- Testing
Sickle cell screening is offered through local Health Departments
in both family planning and maternity clinics. We encourage parents
whose newborn has been identified with sickle cell disease or trait
to be tested. To see if you qualify for free screening, please contact
your local health department.
- Counseling
Anyone who has had sickle cell screening or whose newborn has been
identified with a hemoglobinopathy should receive a copy of his or
her test results and offered educational genetic counseling. This
process involves the clear communication of all the medical, psychological,
social, and genetic factors related to the specific trait being discussed.
