Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that affects the shape and function of the red blood cell. This serious chronic disease is the number one genetic disorder identified in the African American population.
The Virginia Sickle Cell Awareness Program (VASCAP) is the states coordinating program for sickle cell education, testing, and follow-up counseling. Services include:
• Partnering with programs in the public and private sector to provide community education and awareness regarding sickle cell disorders.
• Providing educational models and professional training for those working with individuals and families living with sickle cell disease.
• Working with the perinatal regions to assure pregnant women and their partners receive appropriate testing, education and genetic counseling for sickle cell and other hemoglobin variants.
• Collaborating with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Division of Child and Adolescent Health in tracking babies identified with sickle cell disease.
• Contracting to provide quality adult sickle cell screening.
