Partners in Prevention is a grant-funded program managed by the Virginia Department of Health.
The goal of Partners in Prevention is to reduce the incidence of non-marital births within the Commonwealth of Virginia, while reducing the incidence of abortions, through the establishment of community-based coalitions. Partners in Prevention was established after the 1997 Virginia General Assembly in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Health, Department of Social Services, and the Office of the Secretary of Health and Human Resources allocated one million dollars in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) welfare reform funds to the establishment of a program aimed at reducing non-marital births. Initially PIP programs were funded for a five-year RFP process (FY00-FY04). The General Assembly appropriated $765,000.00 for this initiative in 2004. Thus, 10 local PIP programs were awarded contracts for FY05. Contingent upon the availability, and program performance of funds these contracts may be renewed up to four additional years.
