Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention
Mission:
The goal of the Lead-Safe Virginia Program is to identify sources of lead exposure among children under six years of age. Technical assistance is provided statewide in the areas of medical and environmental assessments, provider training, public education and coalition building, and referrals for code enforcement when required. The primary source is dust from lead-based paint in many of Virginia's 1.8 million homes built before 1978.

Recalls
Many parents are concerned about the safety of children’s toys and products. Due to a spike in national recalls for toys containing high levels of lead during 2008, federal legislation was passed that limits the amount of lead in toys and products for children 12 years of age and under.
