The Virginia Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program received
a rating of "Excellent" from the National Campaign for Hearing Health
in 2001. This award was given to those states documenting a minimum screening
rate of 95.0% and an established system of follow-up. All hospitals in
the state are now universally screening newborns prior to discharge and
are reporting the results to the Virginia Department of Health, as required
by law.

January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2001. This format is a change from the
format previously used.

- Number of Infants Screened: 91,849 (95.1%)
- Number of infants who did not pass the screening: 3,472 (3.8%)
- Number receiving follow-up: 2,459 (70.8% of referred babies)
- Number who passed screening,but at-risk for progressive late-onset hearing loss: 2,381(2.6%)
- Number receiving follow-up:187 (7.8% of all at-risk babies)
