Fewer than 50 % of Virginians get 20 minutes or more of physical activity, of any intensity, 3 or more times per week. This means that more than half of all Virginians are considered sedentary. More importantly, only about 1 in 6 gets 20 minutes or more of vigorous activity 3 or more times per week. This level of physical activity contributes most to reducing the risks of chronic disease, combating obesity and achieving a significant level of fitness. Eighty-four percent of Virginians do not have this level of activity.

As seen in the graph (right), Virginia is one of many states that contribute to the recent trend of having more than 15% of its population 30 or more pounds overweight. This is directly related to recent overall increases in caloric intake and too little physical activity.

It is estimated that fewer than 5% of all commuters in Virginia walk or bicycle to work. However, cycling, and particularly walking, are by far the most popular forms of activity for those who are active. It's further estimated that, of those who walk or cycle during their leisure time, as many as half would commute to work by walking or cycling if safe, separate, designed walking and/or biking paths existed and if their worksites/employers had facilities to support it. How do you feel about it?
