Sexual Violence Projects

Men Ending Violence
Men Ending Violence is a sexual violence prevention program with targeted outreach to men. This outreach allows men and those working with men to become part of the solution to the problem of sexual violence. This program provides training to local communities and produces a statewide public awareness campaign. More information on this initiative can be found at http://www.menendingviolence.com.

Statutory Rape Prevention
VDH first received a grant from the Virginia Department of Social Services through the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Program in 2001. The project has 3 components: data collection, public awareness campaign and training. More information on this initiative can be found at http://www.varapelaws.org.

Funding Local Sexual Assault Centers
VDH funds and provides technical assistance to local sexual assault centers in Virginia to provide sexual violence prevention programming in local communities. In
fiscal year 2008, 14 sexual assault centers are being funded through a competitive request for proposal process. View the 2007 RPE Annual Update. For more information about each center, view Rape Prevention and Education Projects 2007-2008.

Sexual Violence State Plan Advisory Board
The Sexual Violence State Plan Advisory Board was established in 2003 to bring together sexual violence stakeholders and develop a statewide plan for sexual violence prevention programming in Virginia. View the Virginia Sexual Violence state plan and the 2004 board report.

Stop It Now! Child Sexual Assault Prevention
VDH brought a new helpline 1-888-PREVENT to Virginia through a contract with Stop It Now!, a national nonprofit organization taking a public health approach to prevent the perpetration of child sexual abuse. The Helpline's purpose is to answer adults' questions or concerns about child sexual abuse, particularly if they suspect inappropriate sexual behavior between an adult and a child or between two children. All calls are confidential and answered by a trained staff member. The helpline is available Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM (EST) at 1-888-PREVENT (1-888-773-8368). Virginia has implemented a media campaign to publicize the new helpline in Virginia through billboards, bus advertisements, radio spots and posters. Teen Dating Violence Prevention
VDH provides resources to human service providers working with teens. We offer training, brochures, videos and other resources. We support the work of the Teen Dating Violence Prevention Task Force through the Virginia Sexual & Domestic Violence Action Alliance. See the information on the last EMPOWER conference for teens. Order free brochures on teen dating violence for teens and parents from VDH.

Preventing Sexual Assault on the College Campus
VDH works in collaboration with the Virginia Campus Sexual Assault Coalition to offer training and resources to those working to prevent sexual assault on the college campus. To join other campus personnel at Virginia Colleges that are working toward a unified response to sexual assault victims on their campuses, implementing prevention programming and other collaborative plans, join the Campustaskforce email group.
