GET ALARMED, VIRGINIA!
(CLOSED) is a statewide smoke alarm installation
program designed to prevent residential fire-related
injuries and deaths in communities like yours. Since
its creation in 1998, 16 local communities throughout
the state received grants to implement the program.
Because of their efforts, approximately 31,695 alarms
have been installed, 18,993 homes are fully protected,
and 78 lives were saved or injuries averted.
This is the 8th year of the Get Alarmed, Virginia! program.
The Virginia Department of Health is soliciting appliations
from organizations to implement the project between
October 1, 2005 and August 31, 2006. Pending notification
and approval of funding from the US Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, approximately $60,000 is available
for this funding process. It is anticipated that the
average award will be up to $15,000 with multiple awards.
Proposals are limited to organizations that have experience
providing fire or life safety education in Virginia.
Organizations selected through the application process
will be required to install smoke detectors, educate
households on fire safety education and a fire escape
plan, create or utilize fire safety coalitions to help
implement and market the project, conduct pre-surveys
to measure current fire safety knowledge and skills,
and share fall safety tips and resources with residents
65 and older.
The selected organizations will also be required to
kick off their Get Alarmed, Virginia! project during
Fire Prevention Week, October 9-15, 2005.
