Did you know?...Bicycle-related injuries among children outnumber all other con-sum er product-related injuries after motor vehicles?

Bicycling is a fun, healthy activity for children and adults. When done safely, bicycling can provide hours of enjoyment. Unfortunately many people suffer from preventable injuries and fatalities. Bike Smart, Virginia! is a program aimed at preventing bicycle-related injuries and fatalities in communities throughout Virginia. Bike Smart, Virginia! has several components to educate communities about the importance of bicycle safety and to make safety devices, such as bicycle helmets, readily available.

Bike Smart, Virginia Projects

Bike Smart Virginia! Schools: This project provides technical assistance and resources to schools to integrate a unit on on-the bike instruction as part of a school's health and physical education curriculum. This is a collaborative project with the Virginia Departments of Education, health and Motor Vehicles and the non-profit Bike Walk Virginia.

Helmet Safety: Helmet safety is an integral part of the Bike Smart, Virginia! program. Helmets, when worn properly reduce the risk of serious head and brain injury by 85% and 88% respectively. Bike Smart, Virginia! aims to assist communities in raising the awareness of how helmets save lives, increasing the proper usage of helmets among people of all ages and making safety devices such as bicycle helmets readily available to those most at risk.
