The Virginia Department of Health’s Tobacco Use Control Project (TUCP) has released a profile report (Tobacco Indicators by Health District, 2010) of each local health district in Virginia. Each report features the prevalence rates of adult tobacco use, potential exposure to secondhand smoke, and chronic disease as well as the burden (i.e., hospitalization, mortality) of diseases related to smoking and other tobacco use based on the most currently available health behavior and health outcome data from the Virginia Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), state vital records, and state hospital discharge data. Chronic Diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in Virginia. Our goal is to reduce the incidence and prevent deaths due to major chronic disease in Virginia.

Currently, this is accomplished through:

Addressing environmental and policy strategies that affect chronic disease status,
Encouraging healthy lifestyles and addressing risk factors that affect multiple chronic disease status,
Working with a variety of partners to affect change in systems which influence the prevention or control of chronic diseases, such as collaborating with Managed Care Organizations to develop and promote chronic disease prevention opportunities,
Developing chronic disease prevention self-management strategies,
Planning, promoting, and implementing chronic disease prevention training events to develop and enhance partners’ knowledge and skills.
Producing chronic disease prevention data reports,
Coordinating resources and messages for media campaigns,
Managing and supporting community grants and agreements for chronic disease initiatives,
Collaborating across individual disease prevention project areas to achieve a state comprehensive chronic disease prevention approach.
