Diabetes in Virginia: A State Plan
In 1994, the Virginia Department of Health provided leadership for the creation of the Virginia Diabetes Task Force who was charged with assessing and prioritizing the burden of diabetes in Virginia. In 1998, the Virginia Diabetes Task Force completed its mission with the publication of Diabetes in Virginia: A State Plan. In order to enhance ownership of the Diabetes State Plan by diabetes stakeholders and to implement the priorities for action, the Virginia Diabetes Task Force was dissolved in 1999 and a new organization, the Virginia Diabetes Council was developed.

Virginia Diabetes Primary Prevention Project
Virginia partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) and five other state health departments on the Diabetes Prevention Project (DPP). The purpose of the DPP Project was to determine ways to develop successful state-level efforts for preventing type 2 diabetes among persons with pre-diabetes or those at high-risk.
