Diabetes in Virginia is:

• Serious - Diabetes was the 6th leading cause of death in Virginia in 2006.
• Common - More than 700,300 adult Virginians in 2007 were estimated to have diabetes (466,883 diagnosed and 233,441 undiagnosed).
• Costly - In 2006, there were over 11,880 hospital discharges due to a primary cause of diabetes in Virginia, costing over $227 million dollars. When considering hospital discharges due to any cause of diabetes, the cost in 2006 was over two and a half billion dollars.
• Controllable - Since 1999, the statewide percentage of people with diabetes who had their A1c, feet and eyes checked, and who received flu shots and pneumonia vaccines increased.
• Preventable - Since 1999, adult Virginians with diabetes have reported having high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and engaging in less physical activity more often than adult Virginians without diabetes.

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
BRFSS, the world's largest telephone survey, tracks health risks in the United States. This site provides statistics on the prevalence and awareness of diabetes as well as the prevalence of risk factors for diabetes. State and national data can be accessed via this database.

Cardiovascular Disease Burden Report, 2005
This report describes the burden of cardiovascular disease in Virginia, including diabetes as an independent risk factor.

Center for Health Statistics in Virginia
This Center's Annual Reports and Supplements provide detailed information on a range of measures including: population, teenage pregnancies, births, deaths, induced terminations and fetal deaths. Current counts of diabetes-related deaths for 2007 can be found on this website.

2006 Comprehensive Chronic Disease Data Report
This report is a summary of data pertaining to arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, cancer, disabilities, diabetes, and related risk factors.

Comprehensive Diabetes Burden Report
This report provides a comprehensive look at the burden of diabetes in Virginia and nationally. Data from 2006-2007 on the following topics is included: Diabetes prevalence for all types of diabetes, diabetes risk factors, diabetes hospitalizations and costs, diabetes mortality, end-stage renal disease, and diabetes management practices.

LOCAL DATA

CDC WONDER
This database provides mortality data for all states, including county-level data. To obtain diabetes mortality rates by county, one must access the "mortality-underlying cause of death" database that can be found under "Chronic Disease Topics." Then, access the file called: Mortality for 1999-2002 with ICD-10 codes. From here, state and local mortality rates can be queried. It is recommended that the box for age-adjusting rates be checked. "Diabetes mellitus" can be selected by running a keyword search.

Virginia's Atlas of Community Health
The Atlas database contains county and zip code level data for 114 population, economic, and health indicators and it can produce maps to illustrate the health of a community. The Atlas now contains an additional 32 "Adult Health Behavior" data points, whichinclude 2004 county-level estimates of people with diabetes and many other chronic diseases. Local-level diabetes hospital discharge rates can be found under "Ambulatory Sensitive Conditions." Use of this database is free to the public.

County Level Estimates of Diagnosed Diabetes
CDC's Division of Diabetes Translation provides estimates for adults living with diagnosed diabetes. This is the first data set to provide county-level estimates for all counties in the nation.
