According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), smoking may have a role in the development of Type 2 diabetes.
In 2005, approximately 20.6 percent of all adult Virginians reported smoking currently. This is less than the percent of adults who smoked in 1996 (24.8%).
Virginia smoking rates have been similar to U.S. rates since 1996.
Adult males (21.6%) were slightly more likely to smoke than females (19.7%).
The 35 to 44 year-old age group had the highest rate of smoking at 26.6 percent. The 65 and older age group had the lowest rate at 7.8 percent.
As income increased, smoking rates decreased. In other words, the more money a household made, the less likely household members were to smoke.
Education had the same effect as income. As education increased, smoking rates decreased.
Healthy People 2010 Objective:
(27-1a.) Reduce cigarette smoking by adults to 12 percent.
