Prevalence of Diabetes in Children

Currently, there are no state-level data sources for which to estimate the prevalence of type 1 or type 2 diabetes in children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate the following:

• 0.22% of all people in the U.S. who are under the age of 20 has diabetes.
• Type 1 diabetes accounts for five to 10 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.
• About one in every 400 to 600 children and adolescents has type 1 diabetes.
• Type 2 diabetes can occur in children and is happening more frequently. Although, it is still very rare.
• According to clinical studies and regional reports, type 2 diabetes in children has been found in to occur more frequently in the American Indian, black, and Hispanic populations.
