Medical Emergency Response Plan   (MERP) - a worksite emergency response plan that helps employers improve outcomes and reduce costs from heart attack and stroke.

The MERP highlights practical steps and key factors on assessing a worksite’s emergency response needs, acquiring the equipment and resources to implement a plan and taking action to train an on-site emergency response team. The guide was reviewed and endorsed by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and the State Office of Emergency Medical Services.

Information in the Plan includes:

• a Quick Start Guide that focuses on the major things needed to prepare for a medical emergency, particularly a heart attack or stroke.

• an Implementation Guide that helps employers assess their internal communications systems, the amount and condition of their emergency equipment, the number of  employees who have or need emergency training and the estimated costs. It also   provides information on where to acquire automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) and other basic life support equipment as well as sources and descriptions of training courses. The guide also provides sample policy and protocol statements and discusses the proper placement of signs for the nearest first aid equipment.

Non-Medical Facility Emergency Protocol Kit (EPK)

Would your employees recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack or stroke? Would they know what to do if someone at work was having a heart attack or stroke? Does your worksite have a plan in place to handle these medical emergencies?

To assist worksites to respond appropriately to these types of life and death events, the Virginia Heart Disease and Stroke Alliance has developed an Emergency Protocol Kit for Non-Medical Facilities. The kit includes:

• An introductory letter with instructions on how to use the information provided.
• An 8 ½ X 11 inch flyer that provides the warning signs of heart attack and stroke as well as a flow chart instructing by-standers on what actions to take in the event of such an emergency (for distribution to all employees).
• A 17 X 22 inch poster containing the same information as the flyer that can be posted in strategic areas throughout the worksite.
• Contact information for the American Heart Association’s Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training courses.
