Virginia Cancer Mortality Data

The Division of Health Statistics in the Virginia Department of Health compiles cancer mortality figures and calculates mortality rates. Consult the Division of Health Statistics web site for cancer mortality statistics in the state.

United States Cancer Statistics
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides this web site. The CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries maintains it.

Cancer in North America
The North American Association of Central Cancer Registries maintains this web site. It provides comparative incidence and mortality data for the United States and Canada.

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)
IARC is an international cancer research organization. Consult the IARC web site for international cancer incidence statistics.

Notes:

Data presented

• The data are cancers reported to the Virginia Cancer Registry for Virginia residents who were diagnosed with reportable cancers between 2000 and 2004.
• The Virginia Board of Health defines reportable cancers in its publication, Regulations for Disease Reporting and Control.
• Cancers in Virginia residents diagnosed at an out-of-state facility and reported to the Virginia Cancer Registry are included.
• Non-Virginia residents whose cancers were reported to the Virginia Cancer Registry are not included.
• Data exclude localized basal and squamous cell skin carcinomas and in situ carcinomas except urinary bladder.

Case counts

• Case counts are counts of reportable cancers, not patients. A patient may have more than one reported tumor.
• Case counts less than 11 are not displayed.

Rates

• Rates are age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population using 19 age groups.
• Rates are not calculated for case counts less than 16 because such rates are not stable and are difficult to interpret.
• Age-adjusting is a statistical method that controls for differences in population age structures.
• Age-adjusting allows rates from different populations to be compared.
