The Virginia Department of Health’s Tobacco Use Control Project (TUCP) report on tobacco use
prevention policies in public schools in Virginia. The report describes the results of a survey completed
by school superintendents from 91 public school divisions (of 133 total divisions) in October 2010.
Main finding: Although school divisions had policies in place that regulated tobacco use by students,
staff and faculty, and/or school visitors, only 32 (35%) divisions had a comprehensive tobacco-free
policy that includes a ban on use of all tobacco products on school grounds and at school-sponsored
events off-campus.
