August 2008
On August 1, 2008, Virginia's WIC Program implemented a new policy entitled "Caretaker" to provide
increased flexibility for parents/guardians who have difficulty attending WIC clinic appointments.
The policy allows for the designation of an individual who cares for the infant or child, and has
detailed knowledge of their eating habits to attend certification visits, nutrition education classes,
and pick up and utilize food instruments. The caretaker is required to provide the same information
for program certification that a parent/guardian would provide to establish program eligibility.
The parent/guardian is responsible for all actions of the caretaker in regards to the WIC Program.
For more information regarding this new policy, or for further information concerning the Virginia
WIC Program please call 1-888-942-3663 or your local health department.
