Under a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, VDH and the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance led a planning process for Virginia's Rape Prevention and Education funds. The draft plan will be available June 30, 2009 for review.
VDH funds and provides technical assistance to local sexual assault centers in Virginia to provide sexual violence prevention programming in local communities. VDH funded 15 sexual assault centers in fiscal year 2009 through a competitive request for proposal process. View the RPE Annual Update. VDH addresses the issue of teen dating violence through training, media campaigns and resources. Current training is available on Choose Respect, Safe Dates and other curricula. More information on upcoming trainings is posted at www.vahealth.org/injury/sexualviolence/training.htm.
Project RADAR is a provider-focused initiative to promote the assessment and prevention of intimate partner violence in the health care setting. Through the RADAR initiative, VDH seeks to enable Virginia's health care providers to recognize and respond to intimate partner violence through universal screening practices, training and best practice policies. Men Ending Violence is a sexual violence prevention program with targeted outreach to men. This outreach allows men and those working with men to become part of the solution to the problem of sexual violence. This program provides training to local communities and produces a statewide public awareness campaign. This program provides education and training on the problem of statutory rape to state and local education systems, family planning nurses, relevant counseling services and youth. It also educates men about statutory rape by training professionals who work with men and boys. VDH partners with Stop It Now! to raise awareness of child sexual abuse and teach that it is preventable. Â This is done through a helpline and online resource center for adults with questions about child sexual abuse, training on Everyday Actions to Keep Kids Safe and a dialogue project that brings together survivors, recovering sex offenders, treatment providers and community members to learn more about how to prevent child sexual abuse. The White Ribbon Campaign is part of a multinational effort to get men involved in working to end violence against women, to raise awareness of the problem and to support organizations that deal with the consequences of men's violence against women. VDH provides training, organizer kits and ribbons for local communities to launch their own campaigns.
