VDH funds and provides technical assistance to local sexual assault centers in Virginia to provide sexual violence prevention programming in local communities. VDH funded 15 sexual assault centers in fiscal year 2009 through a competitive request for proposal process. View the RPE Annual Update. For more information about each center, view Rape Prevention and Education Projects 2007-2008.
VDH provides teen dating violence prevention training, education and community projects using resources from the Choose Respect Campaign of the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Division is currently working with several agencies to implement the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Choose Respect "Playbook" to address healthy teen relationships. The "Playbook" guides these communities in planning and implementing a coordinated community-wide approach to promote healthy, respectful relationships for teens. These projects provide information and skills to youth, mobilize parents and caring adults, and enable groups in the community to develop programs and policies to beneficially influence the choices youth make. Information on Choose Respect training is available at www.vahealth.org/injury/sexualviolence/training.htm.
Project RADAR is a provider-focused initiative to promote the assessment and prevention of intimate partner violence in the health care setting. Through the RADAR initiative, VDH seeks to enable Virginia's health care providers to recognize and respond to intimate partner violence through universal screening practices, training and best practice policies. More information on Project RADAR is at www.projectradarva.com.
Men Ending Violence is a sexual violence prevention program with targeted outreach to men. This program provides training to local communities and produces a statewide public awareness campaign. More information on this initiative can be found at http://www.vahealth.org/injury/sexualviolence/menendingviolence/index.htm.
This program provides education and training on the problem of statutory rape to state and local education systems, family planning nurses, relevant counseling services and youth. It also educates men about statutory rape by training professionals who work with men and boys. More information on this initiative can be found at http://www.vahealth.org/Injury/sexualviolence/statutory.htm
The White Ribbon Campaign is part of a multinational effort to get men involved in working to end violence against women, to raise awareness of the problem and to support organizations that deal with the consequences of men's violence against women. VDH provides training, organizer kits and ribbons for local communities to launch their own campaigns.
